Raffaele Vincenzo Vonghia, 84, of Toronto, died Thursday, April 20, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Centre.  Born May 13, 1938 in Galatone, Lecce, Italy to the late Pasquale and Maria Vonghia, Raffaele spent his formative years in Galatone, working in farming with his father but later choosing to pursue a formal education.  Raffaele graduated from the University of Bari, Italy with a degree in economics and proceeded to work for 13 years with Banca Nazionale del Lavoro in various locations in Italy as well as in Nigeria.  During this period, Raffaele received the Fullbright Scholarship to complete his MBA at the University of Illinois in Chicago which he achieved in 1964.  In 1969, Raffaele and his wife immigrated to Canada where he began his career with CIBC that spanned 30 years before his retirement in 2003.  Raffaele was a committed family man to not only his wife and 2 children, but to his family back in Italy to whom he traveled each year that he was able.  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bertie; his son, Enrico (Louise); his daughter, Daniela; his grandson, Alex; his brothers Gino and Piero and his sister Anna; his sister-in-law Naida; nieces and nephews, Gianni, Vilsia, Vinicio, and Luisa, and his friends and extended family members.  Visitation and services will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the G.H. Hogle Funeral Home in Toronto at 4pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions to be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (click here) and the Alzheimer’s Foundation (click here).
