Obituary for DOUGLAS COOMBS

It’s with heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the passing of Douglas (Doug) Alan Coombs on July 31, 2022 while in the care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. He will be missed by his cousins Rob (Gerri) Wice, Nancy Wice, Craig (Debbie) Lindsay and Scott (Sue) Lindsay and many other relatives in the extended Coombs and Hornell families.  Pre-deceased by his father Doug Sr., mother Emily and sister Marylee. Doug was born in Toronto in 1944 and lived his childhood years in Mimico, Ontario followed by attending and graduating from Waterloo Lutheran University.  Doug was a long-time employee for Canada Packers and worked at various locations across Canada.   Doug had a zest for life, always with a joke, a great laugh and a friend to all he met. Doug’s passion in life was basketball and spent happy and dedicated time devoted to organizing, coaching and managing many teams.  This passion started in high school and continued to university where his Waterloo Lutheran team won the 1968 Canadian Championship and in 1995 were inducted in the Wilfred Laurier University Hall of Fame.   Doug continued to dedicate his time to the sport throughout his life and in 2018 was awarded Sportsman of Year from the Master’s Basketball Association.  With this association & dedication to basketball Doug made many great & close friends across North America which became friends for life. 

A celebration of life will be held for Doug at Hogle Funeral Home, 63 Mimico Ave., Toronto on Thursday, August 11 with visitation open at 12:30pm followed by service commencing at 1:30pm with reception to follow. The service will be available for online viewing via the funeral home website www.hogle.ca

In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully appreciated to The Canadian Cancer Society and/or Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
