It is with profound sadness that the family of Peter David Vinet announces his peaceful passing on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 in Toronto, at age 65, after a year with brain cancer.
Peter will be remembered with great love by his wife, Diana Muñoz Garcia and his son Dylan, sister Diana (Kenneth Spencer), brother Paul (Lorna Sandler) and daughter Jesse Vinet, brother-in-law Felix Muñoz Garcia (Ann Louise Malone) and children Olivia and Gabriel, mother-in-law Caridad Garcia Rodriguez and father-in-law Felix Muñoz Reyes, uncle Rene Vinet (Irene) and cousins Gary (Roxanne Wood), Andrea Vinet (Rod Stiebel), Neal (Helene Beauchemin) and daughter Marie-Louise Vinet (Yanrick Dupras), aunt Irene Paaske (Rick) and cousin Merrill Clayton, son Ryan Johansen (Maryann) and daughter Andrea Derrick, uncle Norman Vinet and cousins Lise Bettens (Anthony), son Kol and daughter Brooklyn, Matthew (Tasha), son Dylan and daughter Jodi, and Mark, friends Pierre Home-Douglas (Jocelyn Wakefield), John Bourgeois (Maria Ricossa), Geoff Bowie and Petra Valier. Peter will be greatly missed by his friends and by colleagues at The United Church of Canada.
Peter was predeceased by his father, Rudolph Joseph Vinet, mother Jessie Florence (Harsant) and sister Claire.
Born in Montreal, Peter studied Film and Communications at Concordia University, and at Université de Montpelier in France. In Toronto, he pursued a career in documentary filmmaking. Peter worked with the United Church of Canada for over 15 years, and filmed in Canada, Cuba, Angola, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.
From an early age, Peter had a keen understanding of technology and a great eye for photography. His was a creative life, spent in film as a camera operator, editor, director and producer. Peter avidly shared his knowledge and exceptional talents and was respected and loved by all who worked with him.
Peter loved music, books and reading, films, the outdoors and his Triumph Scrambler motorcycle. He hitchhiked across Canada, hiked in Yoho, Kootenay and Banff National Parks, and the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. He loved canoe camping trips with friends and later with his family.
Peter met Diana, a television journalist in Havana, while filming a documentary about the Church in Cuba for the United Church of Canada. With their son, Dylan, they enjoyed family gatherings and travelled widely in Canada, the US, Cuba, Europe, and Latin America. Family has always been important to Peter. He was a devoted father and husband, a loyal brother.
A Funeral Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd, in Toronto by Rev. Stephen Fetter, who knew Peter personally and professionally.
