Patricia Chantry worked with me for nearly a decade at the CBC as we pulled together the elements for a ‘The Fifth Estate’ episode every Tuesday during the season. In the morning we directed studio operations while each of the on-air hosts introduced the next item coming the viewers’ way. Pat sat at the control panel, working both hands: her stopwatch in one; pen in the other. After a hurried lunch we went up to the videotape machines, where our editor put the whole thing together, from front to back. A single episode ran for fifty-eight minutes and fifty seconds, not one second more or less. Pat brought us in every week, on time – and in time. We had to be finished and our broadcast tape rewound and on-cue at 7 o’clock, because from that moment on it rolled on air to the Maritimes. Ten years of Tuesdays were busy days for Pat and me – and she was always cool.

By coincidence, my wife and I knew both Chantrys, wife and husband. Pat worked with me at CBC. David worked on the technical side with my wife, Carol, at TVO, where she produced a live, 90-minute call-in show, Speaking Out, hosted by reporter Harry Brown.

Pat and David. They were the nicest couple. Wonderful people to know.
