“The Queen of Tecumseth Street”

With heavy hearts the family of Shirley Tophen is saddened to report her passing at Toronto Western Hospital on February 11, 2019, in her 91st year.

Beloved wife of the late Tony Tophen. Survived by her brother-in-law Bill Tophen (Barbara). Predeceased by sister Lillian O’Connor, brothers Percy Adams, Keith, Cyril, Eugene, and Grant Cooper. Loved and sadly missed by nieces Sharon Cooper and Carol Bentley and nephews Dave and Larry Cooper and their families. Our deepest thanks to the Queen West Public Health Clinic and to the many dear neighbours and friends who took such good care of Shirley on a daily basis.

An informal celebration of life will be held at G.H. Hogle Funeral Home on Saturday, February 16th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Although I didn't get the opportunity to know Shirley well but had the greatest pleasure to meet her on Christmas Day with her niece Sharon Cooper when we went to visit her. She had wonderful memories which she shared during our visit and it was such a wonderful pleasure to meet her. I know that her nieces and their families will miss her dearly. Rest In Piece Shirley as you join your loving family that went before.

I am a neighbour of Shirley's on Tecumseth and have known her for 5 years, but my late mother knew her to say hello since our family moved onto the street in the 1980s. I am glad to have heard Shirley's many interesting stories of the past and to have witnessed (and photographed) her love for her little dog, Angel. We had a wonderful neighbourhood celebration at the local Keg in April when she turned 90 and it was sufficiently raucous! Shirley sang for us, but unfortunately no-one succeeded in recording it, as she still had a wonderful voice. When I visited her in the hospital on Friday, a few days before she passed, she was in wonderful spirits and telling stories, which disturbed the woman in the next bed, who tried to tell her to be quiet, but Shirley was not one to be repressed! She told her, it's early still! She recalled the Keg party and giggled that it was the first time she'd ever had that much to drink! While in the hospital I connected via Iphone FaceTime with our Tecumseth neighbour Rosa, who was dog-sitting Angel at that moment, and Shirley got to "see and talk" to her beloved little poodle and tell her how much she loved and missed her little girl. I'm so glad she had that last chance to connect with her. Poor Angel misses her terribly, but is going to live with people who knew them both well & will love her forever, so Shirley can be at peace knowing this. Sincere condolences to the family and friends of the unforgettable Shirley from the Hammond family on Tecumseth St..

To Shirley's family - We lived next door to Shirley for eight years from 2000 - 2007. We have many fond memories of Shirley's great insight and knowledge of the neighbourhood. Shirley was a 'force' that always expected the best behaviour from people and was not afraid to let them know! A great neighbour and friend - she will be missed by those who knew her. We are in Collingwood preparing for a two month trip to California otherwise we would be there tomorrow. Shirley was one of a kind, we were glad to call her our friend. Deepest sympathy to the family. Garth and Craig
