A Mother’s Love, A Son’s Thankfulness

It was a long time ago, but I still remember the day Mom and I were at Sick Kid’s Hospital.  I was only 15 years old and scheduled to have back surgery to correct the severe curvature of my back.  I had a choice of whether to have back surgery or not. There was a 5% chance of becoming paralyzed from the operation, but if successful, I could live a normal life.  If I chose not to have the surgery I could avoid much pain, but would die from respiratory failure at age 25 due to my spine curvature collapsing my lungs.

I chose to take my chances in order to live a normal, healthy, long life.  Mom was very supportive in my decision and was with me every step of the way.  We arrived at Sick Kid’s Hospital at about 10 AM and were asked to wait in the lobby as they didn’t have any available beds.  After 3 hours waiting, we inquired as to what was taking so long.  It took a total of 13 hours to finally get admitted!  We were admitted at 11 pm.

While waiting so long I started to have second thoughts about having the operation.  I continually asked mom to go home and have the operation later.  Well, from a mother’s intuition not only did she realize I was afraid of the pain I would have to suffer, but also that I was having second thoughts while we were waiting.  She kept telling me to be patient, and that I made a choice and had to follow through with it.

Because of Mom, I went through with the operation.  She visited me every day in the hospital and gave me the comfort and love I needed to deal with the excruciating pain and heal quickly.  I was supposed to be the hospital for at least 4 weeks, but because of mom, was out in 2 weeks!  The surgeon and nurses were astonished at my recovery time.  Thank you for your comfort, love and stubbornness mom.  I am standing here today because of you.

Love,

Sean.
